SuDS = Sustainable Drainage Systems

Helping alleviate flood risk

Todays’ climate means we face uncertain weather patterns, increasingly frequent exceptional episodes and a depleting environment.

‘Once in every 10 years’ floods are now happening every two, three or five years.  Issues with more extreme weather have been exacerbated by the loss of permeable landscape, and its replacement by hard landscaping, paved areas and vast areas of tarmac or construction.  All of which means we have increasing amounts of surface run-off: rainwater ‘looking’ for somewhere to go… and it reaches our traditional piped drainage quicker than ever before and in larger volumes than ever before too.

The result has been higher peak flows, creating serious flooding, pollution, damage to property and habitats, and contamination of groundwater sources.

Sediments and debris from modern living and increasing acres of hard-standing make their way into local streams and rivers, and in extreme events, combined sewer overflows surge into these watercourses too, adding to the rising levels of phosphorus and nitrates.  All of this pollutes our rivers, causing excessive growth of algae, making it difficult for aquatic plants and animals to survive and preventing us from using the water too.  In extreme cases, fish die and people can become ill if they ingest the water.

But there are things we can do to address the problems and eventually reverse the trends: they start with adopting Sustainable Drainage Systems, or SuDS.

SuDS are a natural approach to managing drainage in and around properties and other developments.  They mimic 'natural' drainage by adopting techniques which slow and absorb water which runs off from a site, allowing natural processes to break down pollutants, before releasing it slowly back into the environment.

SuDS can be used as either an alternative to, or an addition to, traditional drainage systems.  Which is where the SuDSPlanter comes in.  Easy to install as a retrofit or to a new build, our planters filter rainwater, slow peak flows, improve water quality and increase biodiversity.  They alleviate flood risks whilst making our gardens greener and our cities, rivers and beaches cleaner… that’s exactly what SuDS is all about.
